Medical Travel Funding Checklist
Honest funding planning protects families from the worst surprise — running out of money mid-treatment. Use this list before committing to travel.
Know the full cost picture
- Hospital estimate for the planned care (from the hospital only)
- A reserve for care beyond the estimate — plans change
- Flights for all travelers, with changeable tickets where possible
- Lodging for the full realistic stay, not the optimistic one
- Daily living: food, transport, phone, laundry
- Visa fees for each traveler; translation and document costs
- Coordination service fees, confirmed in writing
Identify the funding sources
- Family funds and support from relatives
- Government sponsorship programs in your country, if any
- Private insurance — confirm in writing what is covered abroad
- Charitable foundations that fund pediatric treatment abroad
- Community fundraising, with realistic timelines
Prepare the proof
- Bank statements or sponsor letters — hospitals and visa officers may ask
- Written guarantee of payment from any insurer or government sponsor
- A clear record of who pays what, agreed inside the family before travel
